LAUNCH: Tony Hamawy
Elegance. It's something that most brides crave for that most special of days - their weddings. With sweeping skirts, intricately arrayed bodices, and gracefully-falling fabrics, Tony Hamawy's bridal dresses typify that preferred beauty.
Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Tony was raised in the garment business. After learning the industry in the family firm, he went on to apprentice with a traditional women’s clothier. There he became schooled in the old-world methods of couture and handwork.
Positions with various well-known Lebanese designers, catering to the fashion elite of the Gulf and Europe, eventually spurred Tony to formal study in Paris. After completing his education in French fashion design there, his journey brought him to the US to begin his own line in 2007.
His vision is to combine European detailing with New York flair in elegant but playful collections of bridal dresses and evening wear.

SkyNova15 Takes Off Tomorrow!
If you have 15 minutes or so to spare this week, we invite you to join a little online experiment Sydney Skybetter and Tim Cynova are attempting!
An online program the two started together called Sky/Nova:15 (video, live webchat and archived episodes are at ustream.tv/channel/skynova15 -- you can also watch it live on iPhones and Androids by downloading the free Ustream Viewer app) premieres tomorrow! It's a conversation centered around the arts, culture and technology with the occasional absurdity (Arts administrator trading cards? Astronaut ice cream and hover chairs as part of the arts-going experience in 75 years?).
The hope is to illustrate a few of the ways free and inexpensive technology can be combined to help us connect with and engage audiences (in our case probably both people), while also talking with some of the fascinating and fun people they know from the dance world.
The Twitter handle is @SkyNova15 (they'll announce guests ... read more.

Ballet Repertory Workshop with Cherylyn
Cherylyn Lavagnino will be teaching contemporary ballet repertory at Peridance Center beginning May 31 and continuing through June 4. The Monday-Friday series of classes, running from 1:00-2:30 pm each day, will be for female ballet dancers, and it is strongly suggested that they bring pointe shoes.
Cherylyn Lavagnino's work explores how the ballerina can be conveyed as independent, strong willed, and physically dynamic. The class will incorporate a ballet barre to prepare the dancer for the full range of movement and dynamic variation of the choreography, and the workshop more generally will focus on the execution of Lavagnino’s contemporary ballet aesthetic. Specific phrases will be introduced so that as the material is explored, both technical and performative information will be relayed to each dancer.

Single class: $17

See the Obama Generations Wizard of Oz
DanceNOW presents nicholas leichter dance’s new THE WHIZ: EMERALD CITY, the Wizard of Oz for the Obama generation, as a part of the Spring 2010 Dancemopolitan series. After the inspired debut of You Can't Win Brand New Day Medley at the 2009 Dancemopolitan Modern [Dance] Musical series, DanceNOW invited Nicholas Leichter and Monstah Black to expand their piece into a full-evening work. Using music reconstructed from The Wiz and some added selections, THE WHIZ reimagines New York’s underground communities through song, dance, and Prince-esque extravaganzardry. Leichter will choreograph and perform with his company of eight dancers, while Black reconstructs and performs the score live.
The Oz of Leichter and Black references the film characters, but is a reflection on 21st-century New York in movement and melody rather than musical-theater homage. Various themes appear throughout the 70-minute work with an array of different styles—house, funk, postmodern, ... read more.

Fifteen weeks of classes will return this spring, with classes and workshops held weekly from March 1 - June 12.
CLASSCLASSCLASS nurtures a continued future of dance pedagogy in New York City by engaging and developing a new generation of dance and performance artists as they teach their craft, while simultaneously making the act of taking and teaching class affordable for all. This year CLASSCLASSCLASS is partnering with Movement Research, but will continue to be a separate entity maintaining our own mission, goals, and modus operandi. We are hoping that this relationship fosters a very fertile space for newer teachers to experiment with their craft under the umbrella of an established organization.
Classes $10
Workshops $15

NEW PROJECTS ON THE HORIZON
DB is thrilled to be welcoming two new clients to its agenda!
Isabel Gotzkowsky and Friends (IGaF) was founded in 1998 as a not-for-profit dance company focusing on technical and expressive excellence. Artistic Director Isabel Gotzkowsky established the company as a vehicle through which to communicate her ideas about movement and its potential to demonstrate the nature of the human condition. Her background in movement science has allowed her to focus on the kinetic capacity of the body, both as a physical and an emotional instrument.
As well as performing in traditional venues for concert dance and teaching in established programs, IGaF seeks to travel to communities around the world that have less opportunity to see and study modern dance. Involvement with these communities not only includes performances by the company, but also employs an interactive approach to encourage dance enthusiasts of all levels to take part ... read more.

Urban Bush Women at DTW
Kicking off the Urban Bush Women’s 25th Anniversary season at Dance Theater Workshop January 20-23, Zollar: Uncensored explores and interrogates Jawole Willa Jo Zollar’s early investigations into the sensual and the power of women. Her early work explored these themes; however they were considered by many to be too controversial for touring in the late 80’s. This is the first time since that time period that Jawole has revisited this content. Still interested in “erotic integrity,” Jawole examines an essential aspect of human nature from an empowered stance.
“So juicily do the dancers in Jawole Willa Jo Zollar’s company project empowerment, self-esteem, and strength under duress that after every dance, you want to cheer.” - The Village Voice
“I work to listen and help uncover the under-told perspectives of people who have often been told they have limited power and potential.” – ... read more.

Claustrophobia
A performance by The Equus Projects
November 8th, 2009, 5pm
Pomona, NY
The Equus Projects is a dance company made up of professional dancers trained in natural horsemanship. Their capacity for physical listening enables them to create kinetic dialogue with their equine partners.
Horse and human grapple with the constraints of claustrophobic environments -- physical claustrophobia and emotional claustrophobia. The raw underbelly of human behavior is exposed as humans encounter their desire to be heard and be understood.
Claustrophobia brings the audience into close proximity to witness the intensely dynamic, ever changing relationship between equine and human.
The performance will be followed by refreshments.

LAUNCH: Yin Mei Dances website
The Design Brooklyn team is eager to announce its launching of Yin Mei Dance's website, www.yinmeidance.org!
YIN MEI DANCE exists to further the choreographic and performing efforts of company director Yin Mei, who has been a professional dancer since the age of 14, when she joined the Henan Province Dance Company in her native China. Yin Mei has been choreographing and performing contemporary works worldwide since coming to the United States in 1985. She formed Yin Mei Dance in 1995. In Yin Mei’s vision, the company’s purpose is to touch people through performance – indeed, to offer work that goes beyond performance, offering and evoking a personal, even spiritual connection between performers and the audience. Yin Mei sees her work as both traditional and experimental, as drawing on classical sources while willing at the same time to subvert them. Design Brooklyn is pleased to announce the launching of Tracy Marie's website, www.indigotoamber.com!
Thoughts from Tracy Marie about her series "Self Storage":
...In the series, "Self Storage", both long and short exposures are used to catalog myself. Polaroid gives me a feeling of profound and instant gratification. It differs from the digital age in the way that an image on the screen cannot compare to the feeling of holding the photo in my hand. There is something that draws me to Polaroid; they are one of a kind, and no amount of planning can secure the result. Watching the rich colors and emotions develop before my eyes allows me to release, and give a voice to my passion...

skybetter and associates await Joyce Soho
Co-founder Sydney Skybetter's modern dance company, skybetter and associates, will begin a residency at Joyce Soho September 15th. Its Joyce SoHo Artist Residency will be devoted to the creation of Fugue State, a quartet to Shostakovitch’s Quintet For Piano & Strings op. 57 (1940). In the mean time, the company will be working with those of us here at Design Brooklyn, exploring emerging audience engagement methodologies, including rehearsal live-streaming, online archiving and web-based sharing of the choreographic process. Studio photos taken by Kokyat September 15th during the company's rehearsals with the newly-formed chamber ensemble, Group Therapy, have already begun a sort of digital archiving of the work. Dancing zombies hit Fringe Festival stage
This week DB co-founder Sydney Skybetter is breaking into the world of musical theatre, with dancing, bloodthirsty zombies replacing his typical company of modern dancers in the premiere of Ren Casey's musical Graveyard Shift.
In Graveyard Shift, the President of the United States has just informed the nation that a horribly contagious virus is spreading, turning citizens into bloodthirsty zombies. While the entire country is in panic mode, an ensemble of employees at the ValueVille Superstore working the graveyard shift lock themselves in and try to survive the night despite the rampaging ghouls that threaten to get inside.
Skybetter's choreography is being presented alongside the musical compositions of director Ren Casey at the Minetta Lane Theater August 27 at 7 p.m., August 28 at 4:15 p.m. and August 29 at 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased from the official ... read more.

Tickets on Sale for Brooklyn-Based Band
This Brooklyn-based band's experimental mishmash of electronics, indie guitar rock, free jazz, funk, soul and occasional a cappella doo-wop vocals recalls the adventurous mix of music on early Funkadelic albums while invoking the likes of the Beach Boys, Jesus & Mary Chain, Otis Redding and even Aphex Twin. TV on the Radio gained fame beyond the underground rock world with the major-label release of its second full-length album, Return to Cookie Mountain in 2006, and its 2008 follow-up Dear Science.

Animal Collective to Perform in Brooklyn
2nd Show Added After First Sells Out
Despite the evident appeal of their deliciously skewed songs, heartbreaking hooks and deep pop sensibilities, Animal Collective is clearly not a simple or stable ‘band’ proposition. Friends and musical partners since 1992, core members Avey Tare and Panda Bear came together in 2000 with the intention of moving pop music in a direction that would place heavy emphasis on sonic experience. Soon after this, they began operating as Animal Collective, an umbrella name now used for a grouping of four people: Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist and Deaken, who play together under different names and in different configurations (anything between 1 to 4 people), and whose releases are prone to continual musical change: from beautifully skewed pop ballads to fiercely ruptured noise-squalls to tribal rhythmic work-outs to simple folk songs, to who knows where; from fully orchestrated group freak-outs to a the intimacy of an acoustic duo.

Purple Rain Sing-a-Long in Prospect Park
Enjoy Music & Movies on NYC's Largest Outdoor Screen
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of history’s greatest pop albums, and the extravagantly, hilariously whacky and over the top film it inspired (the apotheosis of both the purple one’s genius and self caricature), don something lacey and ruffled and get your Prince on. Lyric subtitles will be available, but you know the words already. Joy Dragland of Brooklyn's live disco orchestra Escort certainly does; Purple Rain was the first cassette she ever owned. Dragland and others from Escort will lead the sing-along, after the band puts everyone in the mood with an opening set. (Note: The film is Rated R and admission of anyone under 17 will require an accompanying parent or guardian. The whole evening will feature scenes of extreme sexiness throughout.)

Presenting: YIN MEI DANCE
The DB team is looking forward to launching the website of YIN MEI DANCE come early September! Here is just a brief glance at Yin Mei, the mastermind behind the company:
YIN MEI is a category-defying director/choreographer/performance artist known for creating dance theater works that fearlessly bridge geographic, technological, artistic and cultural divides to conjure a unique brand of theatrical magic. Having forged a dance style employing Chinese energy direction and spatial principles as a means of creating contemporary dance theater, Yin Mei has established herself as a choreographer and performance/visual artist uniquely positioned to explore themes of artistic and spiritual significance arising at the intersection between Asian traditional performance and Western contemporary dance. She has collaborated with an astonishing array of other artists, from well-known visual artists such as MacArthur Award-winning Xu Bing and Cai Guo Giang (US/China) ... read more.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” -- Arthur C. Clarke, Profiles of the Future (1962)
My younger sister, Rachel, is well on her way to having 2,000 “friends” on Facebook.com. This obscenely high number consists of “friends” from elementary school, current roommates, our mother (begrudgingly), college professors, among many, many others she has collected over the years. Her Facebook profile remains constant as her mail and email addresses change over the years, and it contains more photos of her than are held in family scrapbooks. She does not plan on leaving Facebook any time soon.
This kind of hardcore facebooking has curious social effects. On her birthday, ... read more.
