Lessons from a Social Media Guru

Finding the time - and energy - to become savvy with social media can be incredibly difficult, especially if you haven't upgraded from your Nokia phone to Apple's latest 4G. Nancy Wozny, a self-deemed "underemployed, washed-up arts reporter" hoped to discover that social media savviness for herself, so that she could strengthen her place among competition, and stay in touch with the rapidly evolving technological world. To jumpstart her membership in what she calls the "'follow, friend, like'" club, Wozny surrounded herself by social media gurus, including DB's very own Sydney Skybetter.

Read her full post on CultureMap Houston. For some sneak-peaks of Sydney's words of wisdom you can continue below:

"Communities emerge and die around shared interests. There's a lot of froth coming from social media experts on rules and regs. Something will either work for you or not...but [y]ou can't ignore the volatile nature of the community."

"Ad copy won't fly...you need a little punch and sass, a notion of authenticity. Why does your organization exist? What's your point? If you can't answer for your own existence in 140 characters you should not be on Twitter. The issue of identity and transparency comes into play the moment you get on."
